Processing effects on the properties of hybrid sol-gel superhydrophobic coatings
European Coatings

Researchers have studied processing effects on the kinetics morphology and properties of hybrid sol-gel superhydrophobic coatings.
This 2020 Lexus UX is the world’s first tattooed car
Paul Tan’s Automotive

Lexus has collaborated with a London-based tattoo artist, Claudia De Sabe, to create what it claims is the world’s first tattooed car. Taking a pure white Lexus UX as the base car, Claudia used a dremel tool (in place of a needle) to literally drill away the surface paint, exposing the bare metal underneath. The design features a koi carp along the length of the vehicle, which in Japanese art represents qualities of good fortune and perseverance.
Conversion of carbon dioxide: From greenhouse gas to a high-tech resource
European Coatings

At Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the NECOC research project is aimed at building a unique test facility for active reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2).
Mechanical Properties of Weathered Feldspar Sandstone after Experiencing Dry-Wet Cycles
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

Weathering is one of the important geological hazards to many stone cultural relics carved on feldspar sandstone (such as the Datong Yungang Grottoes). To study the mechanical properties of the weathered Yungang Grottoes, feldspar sandstone was subjected to comparative dry-wet cycle tests with water-rock interaction (Group A) and salt-rock interaction (Group B).
Properties of water-dispersible polyisocyanates carrying sulfonate
European Coatings

Scientists have synthesised water-dispersible polyisocyanates carrying sulfonate and described their properties.
PC Cable-Stayed Bridge Main Girder Shear Lag Effects: Assessment of Single Cable Plane in Construction Stage
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

A model test and finite element analysis were conducted in this study to determine the distribution law of shear lag effect in the main beam section, a box girder, during the cable-stayed bridge construction process. The experimental and theoretical results were compared in an example of loading the control section. The stress value of the cable tension area of the main beam upper edge was found to markedly change when tensiling the cable force and was accompanied by prominent shear lag effect.
An Experimental Study on Wetting of Coal Dust by Surfactant Solution
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

Surfactants can improve the wetting performance of the dust-reduction spraying water, thus improving the dust-reduction effect by spray. In this study, the performance of surfactant solution in wetting coal dust was investigated through experiments. In addition, the effects of surfactant type, mass fraction, metamorphic degree of coal, particle size, and additives were investigated.
Combined Technology for the Parts Recovery Operating in Stress Factor Conditions
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

The structural factor of samples microplasticity deposited with carbon steel construction tapes in connection with the different sensitivities of the deposited metal to stress concentration was investigated. The most favorable structure of the deposited layer, which is characterized by low sensitivity to stress concentration, is found. The combined technology of parts recovery modes operating in stress factor conditions is given.
Improvement of tribocorrosion behavior on titanium alloy by carbide-derived carbon (CDC)
ScienceDirect Publication

A research shows that the carbide-derived carbon (CDC) has been successfully fabricated on metal substrate for the first time. The CDC on titanium alloy shows better resistance against tribocorrosion.Solid lubrication from CDC provides lower friction coefficient and material loss. The CDC sustain the 100 k-cycle experiment without completely wearing off. Cytotoxicity results shows that CDC is biocompatible.
Fundamental Investigation on Seismic Retrofitting Method of Aging Concrete Structural Wall Using Carbon Fiber Sheet-Constitutive Law of Rectangular Section
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

Aging building structure has become a world problem. This problem is particularly serious in developing and underdeveloped countries. The multihazard resilience and sustainability (e.g., seismic performance) decrease at the aging building. A construction method for strengthening aging-reinforced concrete buildings by wrapping structural members with carbon fiber sheets has been proposed and implemented in recent years.
Mechanical Properties of Sisal/Cattail Hybrid-Reinforced Polyester Composites
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

Due to environmental and energy conservation concerns, a thrust towards low-cost lightweight materials has resulted in renewed interest in the development of sustainable materials that can replace nonbiodegradable and environmentally unfriendly materials in reinforced composites. In this study, mechanical properties of a hybrid composite consisting of polyester resin reinforced with a blend of sisal and cattail fibres were evaluated.
